I took these pictures with an ancient Voltlander 35mm using a viewfinder and a flaky handheld lightmeter. These photos were all slides taken in 1971-72 and pretty much stayed in a slide cube all these years."

Rick Smith (died 2002)739 viewsPhoto by Paul Buehrle. Paul writes:

""New artifacts found buried in the Mystery Texan archives. Pictures are from the 1971-72 school year. ... I know that Rick (Smith) wasn't JMC, but he came as close as one can to being an honorary JMC veteran.

On Rick's picture we spent some time cleaning up dust specks and softening the contrast a little, but I always felt that his picture was always one of my best at capturing Rick's sunny disposition."

JMC Kazoo Band - Circa Winter 1970690 viewsPhoto provided by Betsy Bree. Betsy writes:

"This little concert took place in (I think) the Snyder cafeteria during winter term, 1970. Many people were stoned. I wasn't.

I am the stupid looking one with the nose flute in the front.

Other identifiables are Carolyn Shorts (Fermoyle) --only identified by the back of her blonde head and Dave [Brigode] sitting next to her."

I do not remember where that was. I only remember it was a lot of fun and we ate a lot of boloney sandwiches and peanut butter pudding"

"I couldn't remember the source of this photo ... It's a classic. Larry Wickett of Pillowcayse fame is in lower left. ... It looks like '68 to me... 'cause I got there in '69 and I don't recognize anyone."

PeoplesPark.jpg
Peoples Park - Michigan State University, May 1970884 viewsDuring the spring of 1970, a "People's Park" sprang up in the quad area south of the Red Cedar River bounded by Erickson Hall on the east, the International Center (bookstore building) on the south, and Wells Hall (math / languages) on the west. Residents pitched tents (and at least one tipi) or set up improvised lean-to's. The area (also dubbed "Free") remained the scene of a persistent resident population, daily passers-through, and regular gatherings through the remainder of that turbulent spring term.

Kevin Fulton has kindly sent in scanned copies of some photos he took back in May 1970 of the People's Park area.

My best guess is that this photo was taken from the south shore of the Red Cedar, between Erickson and Wells, facing south toward the International Center. (- Editor)

'Russian Tables' - Sny-Phi Cafeteria - circa 1967(?)787 viewsKevin writes...

While going through old pictures for my daughter's yearbook, I came across this photo which John Reid gave me in the early 1980's, after the demise of JMC. In the early years, language students were encouraged to eat lunch together in the Snyder cafeteria and practice their respective languages.

Portrayed are 2 Russian tables. In the foreground (left to right): Debbie Sirotkin, Fran Gribble, Lloydanne Holmes (Russian instructor), Velma Campbell. In the background, the woman with glasses is Ms. Penny (I don't recall her first name); I think the guy in the plaid shirt is David Lichtman.

JMC's First Graduate: Margaret Burrow (Sullivan) - 1968711 viewsThis photo was posted to the Web on a family webpage maintained by Margaret's brother. It shows Margaret and her brothers in front of Phillips Hall, apparently on her graduation day.

Margaret graduated from JMC / MSU in 1968 - only the third year of the College's existence. This makes her the first JMC graduate (or at least the earliest JMC graduate I've yet been able to document).

Her brother's summary of Margaret's post-MSU life and career is available in the JMC Veterans Directory at this site.

A more recent (1998) photo of Margaret is available in the Morrillite Mug Shots Gallery at this site.
