JUSTIN MORRILL COLLEGE Experimental Experience / Experiential Experiment

| JUSTIN MORRILL COLLEGE: FACULTY & STAFF | |||||||||||||
|
This document is an initial attempt to compile and make available a listing of Justin Morrill College staff members (and visiting teachers) during the period 1965-1979. Because the College's demise dates back over 20 years, this effort had to rely on documentary evidence -- primarily from MSU Library resources. For a detailed listing of the materials included, please refer to the Sources. The results are compiled into a large table. For an explanation of the table's layout, refer to "About the Table". For an explanation of the symbols used in the table, refer to the Legend. The most comprehensive 'detective work' covers the periods 1965 through 1973 and 1978 through 1979 (when JMC ceased to be a College unit). The period 1974 through 1977 is still pretty much a blank spot in the documentary coverage. YOU CAN HELP by forwarding the editor copies of any relevant documents (especially JMC Course Descriptions) . Additionally, any reliable data on 'positive sightings' of JMC staff members or visiting faculty on the job at JMC in a particular year would be helpful. Individual and Group Photos of JMC Faculty / Staff are available at the Faculty Gallery section of this Webspace. |
|||||||||||||
About the Table
The large table below alphabetically lists the JMC staff members this editor has identified from the available documents. Entries in the table denote evidence (from the documents reviewed) placing that person on the staff (or teaching at JMC) during the stated year of issuance of the documentation.
Owing to promotions, shifts in job description and/or Murphy's Law, some people appear in the evidence under multiple titles. Although one would expect some variation over time, there are instances where there are variations within a given year. Where this has occurred, a line has been inserted for each title (or combination of titles) under which the person has been identified. Where such multiple titles / entries occur, they are arranged so as to reflect chronological order (of the listings used as evidence).
Please remember that the year(s) of attribution are based on the date the evidence was published. The MSU Catalog is typically published in the spring of each year, and the MSU Faculty and Staff Directory was issued each September. The editor makes no claims for the accuracy of the cited documents, but does believe the listing below is a reasonable interpretation of the documentation as published / issued.
The entries are of different types, with each type connoting something about the source of a particular staff attribution, or an acknowledgement of possible attribution in the absence of specific evidence. The symbology for the table entries is organized as follows:
| LEGEND: | Symbology Used in the Justin Morrill College Staff Listing |
| X |
Evidence obtained from the MSU Catalog issued for the given year (annual date of Catalog issuance unknown). An 'X' therefore denotes the person was listed as a JMC staff member as of the date the Catalog was compiled. NOTE: Catalog evidence is considered of the highest ranking, so if both the Catalog and any other evidence indicate person A was with JMC in year B, an 'X' is entered. |
| @ |
Evidence obtained from the MSU Faculty and Staff Directory for the given year (Directory issued each September). An entry of '@' therefore denotes the person was listed as a JMC staff member as of the date the Directory was compiled. |
| O |
Evidence from other sources (e.g., MSU Schedule of Courses ; JMC Course Descriptions , specific personal knowledge, etc.). |
| ? |
Tentative ascription of JMC affiliation for a given year inferred from any of the above classes of evidence (e.g., '?' to denote presumed presence during intervening years between two separated 'sightings' obtained from other more definite evidence). |
| ...? |
Continuance beyond the last 'sighting' (according to the evidence) is unknown (e.g., because no subsequent evidence suggests continuity deserving of a '?' indicator). This category is primarily motivated by the gap in documentary evidence from 1974 until 1978. |
| ?... |
Continuance leading up to a 'sighting' (according to the evidence) is unknown (e.g., because no prior evidence suggests continuity deserving of a '?' indicator) . This category is primarily motivated by the gap in documentary evidence from 1974 until 1978. |
| ( name ) |
A person's name in parentheses denotes the evidence places him / her at JMC for the given year, although he / she doesn't appear on any official JMC staff roster. This would be the appropriate designation for (e.g.) visiting faculty members from other MSU departments who taught in JMC. The only evidence for such visiting teachers would be the quarterly JMC Course Descriptions, of which only 2 survive in the MSU Library. |

Asch, Marc
"Marc Asch lives in North Oaks, MN., a suburb of St. Paul. I haven't seen him but noticed his ads when he ran for the state legislature a while back. He was only at JMC a short time, but did distinguish himself by coming to work one morning on his horse, which he tethered in the Snyder Phillips courtyard." (SOURCE: Email from John Schroeder, 11/01/00) "I am Marc Asch of horse riding fame. I was an Assistant Instructor in 1968 and then an Instructor for the succeeding years 1969, 1970, 1971. After I left I came back for a single semester in 1972 when Harold Johnson was off." (SOURCE: Email from Marc Asch, 6/04/01) |

Bandemehr, Eckhardt "I last saw Bandemehr in Germany in 2001. He teaches at the Frankfurt International School in Oberursel, Germany where he's been for well over 20 years. Some of his kids went to MSU. He looks almost exactly the same as he did back in the 60s, which means that somewhere there's a picture that's getting quite old." (SOURCE: Kevin Fulton, July 2002) |

"...I started thinking about books that I read in JMC and then I tried to remember if the faculty wrote any books. There must be several, but I only remember one. The book was Human Being and Being Human by a philosophy professor named Edmund F. Byrne. ... He was an Assistant Professor in the Philosophy Department. I think that he was denied tenure (?) and departed campus after a short time. He taught at least one course in JMC, but I think that he offered that course more than once during 1968/69. I believe that it was a course on Existentialism. As I remember it several philosophy students were upset when he left. (SOURCE: Email from Keith Fleeman, April 2003) |

"Mr. Eldredge received his M.F.A. in Theatre Arts from Boston University in 1966. As a faculty member in the English Department at Barrington College in Rhode Island, he initiated and directed their college-community theatre program. He came to MSU in 1969 to pursue his doctorate in Theatre. " (SOURCE: Justin Morrill College Course Descriptions, Fall 1973 ) "Sears Eldridge, by the way, heads the Theater Dept. at McCalester College here in St. Paul." (SOURCE: Email from John Schroeder, 11/01/00) "I was hired to initiate the JMC theatre program, but I also taught in the Inquiry & Expression core curriculum from 1970-1978 ("Making Meaning with Film," etc.). It was one of the greatest teaching/learning experiences of my life. One of my fond memories was team teaching the Myth course with Glenn Wright, but I also taught a two term course with anthropologist Pam Holcolmb called "The Roots of Drama" and an experimental course, "Creative Environments" that had the students construct new environments within existing classrooms to facilitate the teaching/learning go on in a particular class. ...[Productions] I directed at JMC during those years ...[included]... "Balm in Gilead," "Megan Terry's Home," "The Architect & The Emperor of Assyria," "The Bacchae," "Birds of Sorrow," "Labyrinth II," and "In The Bright Existence" ... It is my opinion that the JMC Theatre did some of the most exciting and innovative productions on campus at the time! The student actors and productions staff were wonderful -- so talented and so committed! Faulkner, Eva C. "Eva Faulkner is from France where she obtained her education and an interest in comparative cultures. She began teaching French in JMC in 1967. Besides conversation, she has taught French poetry, and a course on contemporary women. Having a first-hand experience in combining marriage, career and children, she is very interested in the challenge of being a woman. She has an M.A. in French from MSU and a French teaching certificate from Paris. " (SOURCE: Justin Morrill College Course Descriptions, Fall 1973 ) |

"Dr. Friedman attended Queens College in New York City where he received his B.A. in general psychology. A brief period at Temple University preceded his study at Washington University (St. Louis), where he received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology. His main interests besides psychology are sports, especially track and field, politics and now. He prefers to teach psychology in a practical, applied context, but with due respect to theory and research. Porfessionally he works in the Gestalt, experiential, bio-energetic mode." (Gochberg, Don)
"My wife and I met Fall term of 1968 in Don Gochberg's JMC Shakespeare class and performed in (for the one extra credit...remember how at the time JMC courses were often divided into 3 credits for the main class and one credit for something more creative?) an elaborately staged reading of "Everyman." Dr. Gochberg was a visiting prof from University College (ATL, Humanities, etc.) Years later, when U-College was eliminated, he moved, along with many others (including Glenn Wright), to the English Department. I believe he's still there, although he may have retired in the last few years. He was a marvelous teacher, very enthusiastic and with an appropriate flare for the dramatic. He also introduced his students to Eric Partridge's "Shakespeare's Bawdy," which made reading the Bard so much more fun." - Bill Trevarthen, December 2002 |
