Candid Photos of JMC Life
circa 1967

by
Kevin Fulton

Considering the number of people running around Snyder Hall in the late 60s pretending to be photojournalists, I'm surprised that the web site doesn't have hundreds of photographs. My camera broke in the summer of 67, and I didn't replace it until late 1969. I have lots of pictures of my girlfriend taken during my senior year (eating, smoking, sleeping, etc.), but I don't think anyone would be interested in them.

Cheers, Kevin

JMC's First Graduate
Margaret Burrow (Sullivan)
1968

This photo was posted to the Web on a family webpage maintained by Margaret's brother. It shows Margaret and her brothers in front of Phillips Hall, apparently on her graduation day.

Margaret graduated from JMC / MSU in 1968 - only the third year of the College's existence. This makes her the first JMC graduate (or at least the earliest JMC graduate I've yet been able to document).

Her brother's summary of Margaret's post-MSU life and career is available in the JMC Veterans Directory at this site.

A more recent (1998) photo of Margaret is available in the Morrillite Mug Shots Gallery at this site.

"Liberated Zone"
Stalag 17
1970

This photo is the only known surviving evidence for the 'Liberated Zone' (aka 'Outlaw Territory') in Stalag 17 (3rd floor central precinct in Snyder) during 1970. The 'zone' was a section of corridor which the adjacent rooms' residents took over and equipped as a communal lounge / living / work area. As of the time of the '99 reunion, Dave Brigode confirmed that the legend of this 'living room in the hallway' was still being passed down...

This photo was discovered, scanned, and submitted by Anne Zholyn. Thanks, Anne!

If you can provide additional information on the Liberated Zone, please Cont@ct the Editor.

Candid Photos of JMC / Sny-Phi Veterans circa 1971-1972
by
Paul Buehrle

"New artifacts found buried in the Mystery Texan archives. Pictures are from the 1971-72 school year. I can't remember if Gary Haas was JMC or not. I know that Rick (Smith) wasn't JMC, but he came as close as one can to being an honorary JMC veteran.

I took these pictures with an ancient Voltlander 35mm using a viewfinder and a flaky handheld lightmeter. These photos were all slides taken in 1971-72 and pretty much stayed in a slide cube all these years. Last month with the help of a friend, we used a slide scanner to retrieve these images. On Rick's picture we spent some time cleaning up dust specks and softening the contrast a little, but I always felt that his picture was always one of my best at capturing Rick's sunny disposition."

Candid Photos of JMC Life circa 1973

Here are some old, bad (bad for different reasons, and some worse than others) photos from the good old days of JMC. Most of these seem to be about '73.

Here's a photo of Barbara Rosenbaum driving (circa 1971-1973). Barbara writes, "As ownership was theft in those days, the hat was probably only on my head temporarily. However, in contradiction to the above, the car was mine, and Keven reminds me (how had I forgotten?) that it was named Tyrone."

Bill Trevarthen's and Linda Stock's wedding on March 17th of a year it snowed heavily that day. The couple is flanked by Jane Arnold, MSU librarian, and Doug Rick, also JMC.

JMC Theatre Students
Miscellaneous Snapshots

Submitted by Sears Eldredge

In March 2004, former JMC theatre instructor Sears Eldredge sent in a huge compilation of photos and documentation. (Thanks, Sears!!...) As time goes on, these materials will be edited and incorporated into our JMC website.

The photos below (only a fraction of Sears' material) represent those candid snapshots of JMC students among the materials Sears submitted.

Independent Study Group
(Literature)
1975 - 1976

R. Sue Dodea contributed this photo of Justin Morrill College experimental education in action. She writes:

"...During 1975-76, a select group of students created an independent study class to delve into literature during intensive, weekly off-campus sessions.

The evening session sites rotated. This photo was taken during a weekly session at the apartment of Kathy (Czar) Kukielka .

The group was a great success, which had more to do with the bright, lively minds at work than the cheap domestic wine that accompanied the sessions. As Forester concluded, "Only connect." "

"Grill Rats"
(Card players)
circa 1975

This photo was published in the JMC 10th anniversary tabloid (April 1975). The available image was scanned from the yellowed and fragile original hardcopy Cynthia Freeland sent in. Thanks, Cynthia! Owing to the low resolution of the original and the vagaries of scanning, the result is no more than passable.

No caption or associated text was provided to give further information about the scene, the photo, the photographer, or the people shown. The claim that this photo dates from 'circa 1975' is wholly based on the presumption it was recent at the time the 10th anniversary tabloid was published.

If you can provide additional information on any of the people in this photograph, please Cont@ct the Editor.
