EVIDENCE OF JUSTIN MORRILL COLLEGE

This Webpage is the entry point for exploring the objective traces of Justin Morrill College.

This is intended to be distinct from 'Legacy' (traces of JMC's outcomes and effects) and 'Group Memory' (JMC veterans' subjective traces of what was and what happened back then).

In other words, this 'Evidence' category concerns JMC and its operations per se.

If anyone has additional 'evidence' contributions on JMC, its operations, or its history, please Contact the Editor.

  PHYSICAL EVIDENCE
The central locus of Justin Morrill College residential, administrative, and educational activities was the Snyder-Phillips Hall dormitory complex.

This complex is still in operation, and (as of 1999) it remains substantially unchanged from the way JMC attendees recall it. This was a topic of frequent comment during the October 1999 JMC reunion. Examples of this physical persistence include:

  • On Friday night (1 October), there was impromptu 'mixer' held in the basement of Snyder Hall (the original scene of weekly such affairs) and featuring a temporarily-reconstituted Pillowcayse (the de facto 'JMC house band'). The space was literally unchanged since a quarter-century ago -- with even the well-remembered linoleum floors intact.

  • At the point the central / Grill area joins the basement of Phillips Hall, there are impressions of former hinges (complete with bolt holes) still visible in the door / wall moldings. These remain just as they were when the doors were taken down in spring 1970 (when students 'liberated' Phillips -- then exclusively a women's dorm -- to unite the entire complex as a single co-ed residence).

This evidence is available for (general) visual inspection...

MSU kindly provides current pictures of both Snyder and Phillips Halls:

The current MSU University Housing description of Snyder-Phillips Hall (including room floor plans and listing of dorm facilities) can be perused at:

  DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE
Documentation of JMC and its operations is difficult to locate without some detective work. This section offers a listing of the documentary materials evidencing JMC's existence and operations.

JMC: The Liberating Journey (circa 1966-'67)

Cynthia Freeland has preserved a pamphlet written by JMC Dean D. Gordon Rohman sometime between fall 1966 and spring 1967. Cynthia was kind enough to mail me this document, the contents of which I've now (August 2002) transcribed and re-formatted into a Webpage.

Thanks, Cynthia!

This pamphlet contains a number of interesting points, including:

  • Some details of the process by which JMC came to be implemented
  • Some details on the amazingly short timeframe within which JMC was set up
  • An explanation of the themes around which JMC was designed (cf. the JMC Concept Webpage)
  • Some reflections on how things had turned out after the College's first full year of operations

The Sheet (JMC's internal newsletter), Fall 1969

The Sheet was Justin Morrill College's local newsletter. It was composed and printed in the basement of Snyder Hall, then distributed.

Anne Zholyn has preserved a specimen of a 6-page edition issued sometime during the fall quarter of 1969 (best estimate = October 1969), and she has kindly sent in scanned images of the pages. Thanks, Anne!

These scanned images are now available for inspection via a Webpage dedicated to this issue of The Sheet.

The Sheet (JMC's internal newsletter), May 1969

Effective December 2002, we have another electronic specimen ofThe Sheet.

Suzanne (Sheldon) Levy has preserved a specimen of a 4-page edition issued for the week of 17 - 24 May 1969, and she has kindly sent in scanned images of the pages. Thanks, Suzanne!

This one is labeled as "Vol. 11, no. 25". No, the Editor has no idea why a May 1969 issue is "Vol. 11" and an October 1969 issue is "Vol. 1".

These scanned images are now available for inspection via a Webpage dedicated to this issue of The Sheet.

Listing: JMC Honor Roll Inductees: Winter Term 1970

Cynthia Freeland has preserved the list of JMC students certified for inclusion on MSU's Honor Roll following Winter Term 1970. Cynthia was kind enough to mail me a copy of this list, which I've now (July 2002) transcribed and re-formatted into a Webpage.

Thanks, Cynthia!

This list shows the names of each JMC Honor Roll inductee, as well as their year / class and their high school / hometown.

Report of the Provost's Commission on Snyder-Phillips (1970)

This Webpage offers a complete transcription of the 1970 Provost's Commission report on coed living, dorm management, student affairs, and other issues pertaining to the Snyder-Phillips complex and its relationship with Justin Morrill College.

This report was generated by a commission established to look into a variety of complaints and proposals put forward by residents of Snyder-Phillips beginning in early 1969. It includes both a recap of the commission's work, wide-ranging recommendations for changes to be implemented in an 'experimental mode', and a statistical summary of a dorm-wide survey and associated referendum conducted to solicit opinions on coed living.

When you consider the context of that turbulent spring of 1970 (with the nationwide student strike, etc.) this document represents a notable example of revolutionary change (e.g., coed living arrangements) obtained through a combination of activism and negotiation.

The material was obtained from Stewart Lachman, who preserved a copy of the report. Thanks, Stewart!

A Webpage has been created to provide the entirety of the Report's content and a reasonable facsimile of its layout.

Listing: JMC Graduating Class of Spring 1973

Stewart Lachman has hung on to the commencement list of JMC students certified for graduation at the end of Spring Quarter 1973. Stewart was kind enough to mail me a copy of this list, which I've now (June 2002) transcribed and re-formatted into a Webpage.

Thanks, Stewart!

This class list shows the names of each certified JMC graduate, as well as their 'honors annotations' (i.e., whether their degrees were 'with honor' or 'with high honor', as well as indication of membership in the MSU Honors College).

A brief statistical summary has been added to illustrate the relatively high proportion of such 'honor annotations' earned by these JMC students.

JUSTIN MORRILL COLLEGE TENTH ANNIVERSARY (Tabloid, April 1975)

Stewart Lachman, Cleo Parker, and Cynthia Freeland have preserved a tabloid produced on the occasion of JMC's 10th anniversary celebration (April 1975). They were kind enough to mail me copies or originals of this document, the contents of which I'm now (August 2002) sorting through and transcribing into Web materials.

Thanks, Folks!

      Dean Rohman: JMC Today (1975)

One article within the tabloid is entitled "Dean Rohman: JMC Today". It is a summary of where JMC stood after 10 years, what changes had occurred, what had been recommended in the College's 1973 review by the University, and what innovations were both then implemented and still pending. This makes an interesting follow-up piece to the Liberating Journey pamphlet produced some 8 or 9 years earlier.

Alumni Talk about JMC (April 1975)

On the front page of the tabloid is a collection of comments from JMC veterans about the College, its history, and the changes that had been discerned along the way.

These comments have been transcribed into a summary Webpage.

Local Color Dep't.: Muriel Arwin (April 1975)

The tabloid includes a personal profile of Muriel Arwin - the most ubiquitous MSU Food Service person staffing the Sny-Phi Grill.

Muriel's profile has been transcribed into a summary Webpage.

      Coed Living (April 1975)

On the ninth page of the (unpaginated) tabloid is a small collection of comments from interviews with JMC freshman (September 1974) about the newly-implemented coeducational living arrangements in Snyder-Phillips.

These comments have been transcribed into a summary Webpage.

[Online] MSU Course Descriptions 1970-'71 and Continuing

The MSU Registrar's Office maintains an archive of past course descriptions dating back to the 1970-1971 school year. This can be accessed online as PDF (Adobe Acrobat Reader) files - one file per year.

The basic URL (Web address) for the Registrar's Office archive is:

http://www.reg.msu.edu/ROInfo/DescYearIndex.asp

Direct links to individual annual JMC course descriptions are as follows:

1970-71 1972 1973 1974 1975 1976 1977 1978 1979 1980

NOTE: These are the general / generic course descriptions found in the MSU Catalogs. They do not include detailed descriptions of topics or instructors. This term-specific information was only available in the registration materials issued by JMC itself.

[Hardcopy] MSU Catalogs for the Period 1965-1980

Bound copies of past MSU Catalogs can be located in the MSU Library. Each catalog has a chapter / section for JMC -- giving a brief description of the program, a listing of primary staff, the college's curricular requirements, and (at least in some catalogs) a listing of the standard JMC course offerings. As such, these volumes provide nice 'capsule summaries' of what JMC was, and what it was intended to achieve.

The general call number for these catalogs is:

LD3245.M0X

(Where'X' may seemingly vary -- e.g., the 1969 Catalog can be found @ LD3245.M07)

  JMC Course Descriptions

Because many of JMC's courses were topical and therefore changed from quarter to quarter, the Course Descriptions distributed to JMC students are the primary documentation. Unfortunately, this documentation was not collected for comprehensive preservation in the MSU Library.

However, two JMC Course Descriptions (Fall 1972 and Fall 1973) are available in the MSU Library stacks. These give a representative view of the range and style of courses offered within the College.

MSU Library call number = LD 3245.M305 J8 ...

JMC Materials in the University Archives and Historical Collections

As of October 1999, there were three collections of JMC-related materials indexed in the University Archives:

General / Summary Collection of JMC Materials (?)

What would seem to be the main summary collection of documents concerning Justin Morrill College is in the possession of the MSU University Archives. These materials are housed in Conrad Hall. The formal title is: Michigan State University Justin Morrill Interdisciplinary College Programs / Records 1965-1973. According to the MSU Library database, this collection is comprised of 19 folders, and apparently focuses on JMC academic and administrative affairs. The call number for these JMC materials is:

UA 15.12

Associate Provost Records / MicroMARC IF Series

Another collection of materials is held by the University Archives under the general category "Associate Provost Records: 1960-1989". Comprised of 139.5 cubic feet of documentary materials and 20 audiocassettes, this would appear to be the largest lode to be found. The general call number for this collection is:

UA 3.4.

The University Archives WWW page where I found mention of this collection characterizes the set of documents as follows:

* Academic/Residential Colleges. 1972-1980.

ACADEMIC/RESIDENTIAL COLLEGES. 1972-1980. 1.0 cu. ft. Reflects a small accession devoted to Michigan State University's Academic/Residential Colleges. The materials focus mainly on Justin Morrill College, but includes information on Lymann Briggs and University Colleges. Justin Morrill College material focuses on development of programs, such as the Justin Morrill Inter-College Program (JMIP), and curriculum changes. Contained in this series are correspondence, memoranda, statistics, reports, curriculum revisions and schedules. Arranged alphabetically.

    University Committee on Academic Policy

This collection consists of 4 cubic feet of documentation under the title Records: 1960-1983. The relevance to JMC lies in the documentation of the proposals and decisions which led to the College's formation in 1965. The general call number for this collection is:

UA 14.6.3.

  STATISTICAL EVIDENCE
As time has permitted, the Michigan State University Library has been combed for material leading to a compilation of statistical data on Justin Morrill College operations during its lifespan as an MSU college unit (1965-1979).

The statistical summary is available in tabular form on a separate Webpage here at the Justin Morrill College Webspace.
